A new Scholarcy is coming
Next week we will be introducing a new reading experience, to help you declutter your texts and better understand papers.
Key updates
- A simpler, reading-focused interface. Bigger fonts, more readable text, less noise.
- A clear snapshot of the paper and its key findings from the jump. We’ve also made it easy to adjust the summary to your reading style.
- Three key sections: Summary, Analysis, and Original text. This helps to progress from a plain-language overview to the technical details.
- A new sidebar to jump between sections quickly.
- A Dig deeper feature which lets you ask your paper questions.
- An Analysis section to gauge research quality and see how a study compares to others.
- Tons of engine improvements which result in higher quality, more reliable summaries.
- Many speed improvements which will reduce load times by ~30%.
- Plus a whole lot more which we'll cover below :)
A focus on clarity
If one word sums up our goals with this redesign, it's clarity – and if one visual illustrates the point, it's the comparison below.
With this update we set out to simplify things, and put the reading experience at the centre. Now you can get straight to the point of any paper, article or text you import. You can jump to any section of the paper from the sidebar – there's even little progress bars to indicate how far down the rabbit hole you are.
You can read without straining your eyes or turning your head sideways to view tables and figures within PDFs. Whatever the text, you can import it into Scholarcy and enjoy a clear and consistent reading experience.
And while there's only so much we can do about academic monologues and needless jargon, we've put a lot of effort into making research papers more understandable.
Now, by default, we provide structured, plain-language summaries. This gives you a straightforward overview of any paper. And if you want things explained in a different way – say more in-depth and technical – you can hit the Enhance button to regenerate the summary. You can use our Dig deeper feature to ask the paper questions, too.
Note ^: unless it's a paper specifically about woodchucks, you won't be able to ask how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. Dig deeper just digs deeper on the current paper.
Finally, we've introduced better linking between summarised or extracted text and the original text. This makes it much easier to find the source text and verify information.
Overall, clarity has been our focus. We hope this update brings such clarity to whatever it is you're learning – even if it's the history of woodch... moving on.
Start with an overview
Our improved, plain-language summary gives you a solid overview of the paper in a few minutes. You can also switch between generative summaries and extractive summaries.
Enhance your summary
Adjust the summary to your reading level, or jump straight to a summary of the results or conclusion if that’s where you’d like to start.
Analyse & evaluate
The new analysis section takes you straight to more context. This includes quick, reliable insights into: research quality, research comparison, study limitations, future research directions & practical applications.
Jump to important points
The Important Points section makes it easier to find key information in the full text without the stress and scrolling. Feel confident that you can always search and cite sections of the original text without worrying about paraphrasing or plagiarism.
Ask questions, dig deeper
With our Dig deeper feature, you can ask your paper questions and get quick answers.
Take notes as you go
Now, notes are always by your side. Easily paste in key information as you read and come back to them later. You can search for notes on the page you're on, or globally from your Library.
Just show me the data!
If you want to see all the tables and figures from a paper, you can navigate straight to them. Tables and figures can now be expanded within the Original text, too.
Questions and answers
How do I get the new Scholarcy?
Just log into your account from the 23rd of August and open one of your flashcards – or import a paper to see the magic at work.
What happens to the Flashcards already saved to my library?
Your existing flashcards will be updated to reflect the new interface design. You won’t lose any of your content, it’ll just be presented in a clearer, easy to read way with a bunch of additional features!
I liked it the way it was, why have you changed it?
We’ve thought long and hard about this change and talked to a lot of students and researchers to understand their challenges and needs when it comes to reading and understanding research. Extensive user testing of the new interface has shown a marked improvement in reading and retaining complex information. Get in touch at [email protected] for more information on this.
What if I have a question that you haven’t answered here?
Drop us a line at [email protected] and you’ll get a reply within 12 hours (although often faster) from our friendly team :)
